A COMET is an object which originates in the outer solar system which swings around the sun and then back out again. It mainly discusses the asteroids that NASA is currently keeping a close eye on that could harm us or as they put it, "end civilization". I think most kids and young adults would have a pretty firm grasp of the information as well. The Meteor is a science-fiction short story, written by John Wyndham. The tail of McNaught was much longer than other comet tails, which led many astronomers to speculate that it came from a very large comet nucleus, perhaps over 200 km in size.

Very few comets were left with hyperbolic original orbits, and all of those were only slightly hyperbolic. We also would not want to risk creating multiple large fragments that would later hit the Earth. ROSAT images revealed a crescent-shaped region of X-ray emission around the comet 1000 times more intense than anyone had predicted." Also, giant sea waves pounded the coastlines of the planet, crushing or drowning all animals in their path. But what causes the light path of the meteor that we can see in the sky?

These phenomena are due to the effects of solar radiation and the solar wind upon the nucleus of the comet. Chondrites are composed of small spherical chondrules. L., Rettig, T., Brittain, S., Haywood, R., Simon, T., Kulesa, C. 2004. Overview: On this page you can find pretty much anything you want about space. The Asteroids, Meteors, and Comets page, the one I put all my attention towards, was just a sub-section of the main web site. Ground-based efforts to find potentially-hazardous asteroids are described in the previous section.

The topics cover physical aspects, as well as dynamics, and observing programs related to these bodies. Leonid Elenin is an amateur astronomer from Lubertsy City, Russia who routinely observes asteroids, comets and variable stars with a remotely operated telescope in New Mexico. Its low density can only be explained by its porous composition. Another impact site off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, which is buried by ocean sediments today, is believed to be a record of the event that led to the extinction of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago.

The website seems relatively simple to navigate. Different types of chondritic meteorites contain different amounts of metal. We talked about Mars in episode 52, and now that we're back on track our next stop is the asteroid belt. Astronomers add that it is 'potentially hazardous,' meaning there is a chance that it may strike the Earth sometime in the future. They are considered to be heavy and therefore move slowly. The study of meteorites also gives insights into the composition of non-ephemeral meteoroids.

Spiral galaxies are typically surrounded by a halo of older stars. They range in size from a few feet to several miles in diameter. Def. a star whose elliptical orbit takes it "well outside the plane of [its galaxy] at steep angles" [173] is called a halo star. The tail of a comet, called a coma, forms when the comet comes within 100 million miles of the Sun. Plan your observing session as close to the time of shower maximum as possible. It appeared to be moving several degrees per second, which implies a distance of only a few hundred or thousand kilometers away. A single observer under a dark sky can see an average of 5 to 10 meteors per hour; more during a meteor shower. My mother was unable to answer these questions for me, so I derived most of my knowledge from books," says the man with the lively brown eyes. The odds of impact, presently around 1 in 300, are unusual enough to merit special monitoring by astronomers, but should not be of public concern. [NOTE: NASA bends over backwards to pacify concern here.

It is just a general term for anything small that is out there. Also, the likelihood of impact depends on the speed at which a meteor travels through the atmosphere. "In 1990, the Hubble Space Telescope imaged an enormous white cloud near Saturn's equator that was not present during the Voyager encounters and in 1994, another, smaller storm was observed. Sunspots appear in pairs so put 2 chips close to each other.
